About Abbot Giles Hayes
As a dedicated educator, Abbot Giles Hayes has served as headmaster for the Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey. While at the school, he also held the positions of college counselor and chairman of the history and social studies department. Abbot Giles Hayes earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Johns University, a graduate degree in seminary education from St. Mary’s Seminary, and a doctorate from Georgetown University.
Since 1969, Abbot Giles Hayes has served as a reader for the Advanced Placement (AP) college test. In the early 1970s, he played an important role in the implementation of Document Based Questions (DBQ) for AP history exams. A DBQ presents students with one or multiple independent sources for review. Students are then asked a series of questions that require them to form thoughts and insights, as opposed to simply remembering facts. DBQs are now widely used for multiple types of history exams, as well as select English exams.
